Most damage to a car's appearance happens slowly, through habits that seem harmless. These are the tips we share most often with clients who want their car to stay in the condition we leave it.
Washing and drying
- Wash wheels first with separate tools.
- Always use two buckets with grit guards.
- Never wash on hot paint or in direct midday sun.
- Replace your wash mitt when it starts to feel matted.
- Dry with a dedicated drying towel, not a bath towel or chamois.
- Wash microfiber separately with no fabric softener, which clogs the fibers.
Paint care
- Remove bird droppings within a day; they are acidic and can etch clear coat.
- Clean bugs off the front end before they bake on in summer heat.
- Feel your paint inside a sandwich bag after washing. If it feels gritty, it needs clay or a decontamination wash.
- Do not polish more than needed. Clear coat is finite.
- Keep a protective layer on the paint at all times: wax, sealant or coating.
Interior
- Vacuum before wiping, or you will just push dust into crevices.
- Use a soft brush on vents and seams, then vacuum what it loosens.
- Test any new cleaner on a hidden spot first.
- Treat spills immediately and blot rather than rub.
- Use a UV protectant on the dashboard to reduce fading and cracking.
- Condition leather a few times a year, after cleaning it, not instead of cleaning it.
Glass and trim
- Clean the inside of the windshield with two towels: one to clean, one to buff.
- Keep trim dressing off the paint and glass.
- Restore faded plastic trim before it becomes chalky and brittle.
None of these require expensive tools. They just require doing the right thing consistently, which is the real secret behind cars that stay looking new.
